Vietnam's Tea Exports Fall Far Below Year's Targets
HANOI, Dec 27 Asia Pulse - Bad weather and the loss of key export markets during
the past year have caused tea exports to turn over only US$88 million this year, far
below the tea sector's target of $107 million, according to the Vietnam Tea
Association (Vitas).
The figure also represents an outright decline from last year's export turnover of
$91 million worth of tea.
Tea export turnover in the first 11 months of this year reached about 80,000
tonnes, with export turnover of nearly $86 million, according to the General
Department of Customs.
A volume of 80,000 tonnes was far lower than the sector's expectation of 95,000
tonnes, reported Vitas.
The declining figures belie the fact that, in the first 10 months of the year, tea
exports to some markets showed marked increases over last year.
China, for instance, has imported 5,160 tonnes this year, up 2,490 tonnes from last
year. The United Arab Emirates has imported 1,190 tonnes, up 770 tonnes, while
Malaysia has imported 1,650 tonnes, up 760 tonnes. Russia, in the first 10 months
of the year, imported 7,930 tonnes, up 1,770 tonnes.
On the other hand, high prices have driven down demand in other important
markets, including India (down 80.4 per cent), Japan (down 50.7 per cent), the US
(down 53.3 per cent), and Iraq (down 45.9 per cent).
Several markets have also refused new tea export contracts, including Thailand,
South Korea, France, Sweden and Denmark.
The situation is blamed on the lack of established trademarks for Vietnamese tea
and new regulations by some importers such as India, which recently imposed
restrictions on tea imports, according to Vitas.
Vietnam now has 600 tea production and trading enterprises, including 234 export
enterprises.
