Sikkim to start post shops for tea mail
Gangtok, Jan 27: Post Master General (PGM) for North Bengal and Sikkim John
Samuels today announced a bonanza of new postal packages.
Mr Samuels said here that the city would soon get its own separate pin code. The
present pin code 737101 would be changed.
He also said that 'post shops' would be launched in the post offices from February 1
where Darjeeling tea could be bought and posted. The tea posts have already started
in Darjeeling and Assam.
Darjeeling tea packed in small and attractive packages of jute and timber box would
be showcased in such post shops, he added.
Initially 20 per cent discount would be offered on such tea packages for promotion, he
said.
Apart from this, the post shops would have facilities like internet browsing, reading
magazines and newspapers, Mr Samuels said.
''There is also a proposal for inclusion of tea from Temi tea garden in the post shops,
he added. Temi tea garden is the only tea estate in the state, spread over an
estimated area of 435 acres, and produces top quality teas in the international market.
To enhance the reach of postal services, a post box would be made in Nathula border
at a height of 15000 ft, Mr Samuels informed.
Sikkim has 23 permanent post offices and 223 branches all over the state.
