Naxals block Rajdhani Exp demanding reopening of tea gardens
Siliguri: Thousands of tea garden workers, led by Naxal leader Kanu Sanyal,
today blocked the Rajdhani Express at New Jalpaiguri Station. to demand the
reopening of the closed tea garden in North Bengal.
The blockade took place at around 1230 hrs while the train was on halt at the
station.
Mr Sanyal said the tea gardens of North Bengal were sick because the owners
did not care for proper infrastructure.
He further alleged that the West Bengal government did not take any concrete
steps to protect the tea workers. Hence they resorted to the agitation.
Meanwhile, the INTUC, eager to solve the problem of tea gardens, would meet
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi tomorrow, said Mr Alok
Chakraborty, president of Darjeeling district INTUC. He said tomorrow their all
India president G Sanjib Reddy would meet the PM.
He said they had called for a half-day strike on January 31 for the same reason.
