Russia, CIS countries largest Ceylon tea buyers
Russia and the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries continues to
be the largest buyers of Ceylon tea as at the end of October this year, having taken
58.310 million kilograms, a drop, from 59.247 million kilos purchased during the
corresponding ten months of 2004, according to Forbes and Walker (brokers).

United Arab Emirates is a far second, up to end-October this year, with purchases of
29.645 million kilos, an improvement over 24.135 million kilos bought from January to
October, last year.

Syria is in third place, having obtained 23.727 million kilos, during the first ten months
of this year, compared to 24.584 million kilos purchased during the parallel months of
last year.

Iran is in fourth place, counting purchases of 20.927 million kilos, an improvement
from 15.518 million kilos contracted last year.

Fifth place, Turkey has purchased 14.153 million kilos, while during the first ten
months of last year, Turkey's purchases were 21.113 million kilos, according to
Forbes and Walker, statistics.

Jordan shows purchases of 10.631 million kilos, as against 10.910 kilos procured
during the first ten months of last year. Libya, who traded just 51,031 kilos during the
first ten months of last year, shows purchases of 9.389 million kilos during the first
ten months of this year.

Russia and the CIS countries are also the most valuable customers, having
purchased 12.812 million kilos of packeted tea and 3.840 million kilos of tea in bags
for the first ten months of 2005. For this period, these countries have also obtained
1.104 million kilos of green tea, 5.629 million kilos of tea imported into Sri Lanka for
and exported, and 2.096 million kilos of `other teas'. Bulk tea imports into the CIS,
has accounted for 32.826 million kilos.

UAE shipped in 8.954 million kilos of packeted tea, 584.938 kilos of tea in bags and
1.146 kilos of instant tea. Also, 1.662 million kilos of `other' teas.

Syria, Sri Lanka's third largest buyer of tea this year, has also purchases of 6.285
million kilos of packeted tea, and 650,778 kilos of tea in bags.

Following Libya, Saudi Arabia is Sri Lanka's eighth largest buyer of tea this year,
having taken 8.464 million kilos, followed by Japan, with 7.156 million kilos, Iraq -
7.011 million kilos, Chile - 6.233 million kilos and Finland - 5.845 million kilos.
